Local Woman Succumbs To Scam
A local woman requested that an investigation be initiated late last week, saying she feared that she had fallen victim to a scam.
The victim, age 73, reported to deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department that she had received a call from an unknown number around 6:00 p.m. She said that the female caller identified herself as “Marie,” saying that she represented “YHG.” She told the victim that she was calling to verify the address to which her Social Security checks are mailed.
The victim told deputies that she gave the caller her personal information including her Social Security number and birth date. She said the caller continued the conversation and that she became distracted. She said she even provided her with her bank account information.
Deputies advised the victim to contact her bank, Medicare and the Social Security Administration as soon as possible to make them aware of the situation. Investigation in the matter is on-going.
